1199 SEIU Endorses Michael Blake for Congress (NY-15)

The two unions within SEIU have more than 29,000 members in New York’s 15th Congressional District.

Michael Blake, New York State Assembly Member and Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee, announced today that 1199SEIU and 32BJ SEIU have both endorsed his candidacy to represent New York’s 15th District in the United States Congress. These endorsements cannot be understated given the size, diversity of membership, and political track record of both organizations in New York.

1199SEIU has 19,000 members in New York’s 15th Congressional District, while 32BJ SEIU has more than 9,300 members. This news solidifies Assembly Member Michael Blake as a frontrunner in his bid to succeed Congressman Jose Serrano.

I am deeply honored to earn the endorsement of 1199SEIU and 32BJ SEIU in my bid to represent New York's 15th Congressional District. We are excited for the sea of purple from SEIU to help us secure victory on June 23rd in the South Bronx. As a son of an 1199SEIU father who worked for 29 years at St. Barnabas Hospital, and as an Assembly Member who represents a district where the largest employer is Bronx Lebanon Hospital, it is of great personal significance to me to have the support of an organization which Brother Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once described as his favorite union. From ensuring good jobs, quality healthcare, and economic and racial justice for 19,000 Black and Latino Bronxites, to participating in the successful ‘Fight for 15’ that raised the minimum wage to $15, 1199SEIU is a powerful force for working people and fully embraces our #BelieveInTheBx vision.

“We are proud to endorse Michael Blake to be the next Member of Congress representing New York’s 15th District,” said George Gresham, President of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, the largest healthcare union in the nation. “The son of an 1199 member, Michael Blake has been a true advocate for healthcare, jobs and wages, social justice and equity for Bronxites,” Gresham added. “He has helped to create real change in the Assembly, and we are confident that he has what it takes to do even more for the 15th Congressional District. We believe in the Bronx, and we believe in Michael Blake.”

“For decades,” Blake continued, “32BJ SEIU has been a strong advocate for more than 9,300 members across the 15th Congressional District. It has fought tirelessly for causes that are profoundly personal to Bronxites, ranging from health insurance benefits for airport workers, to affordable housing for working- and middle-class families, to comprehensive and compassionate immigration reform.”

“Michael Blake has 32BJ SEIU’s strong endorsement because he has always put the interests of working people at the forefront,” said Kyle Bragg, President of 32BJ SEIU. “He understands that NYC needs to be a place where doormen, cleaners, security officers and all working New Yorkers can live, work and thrive.

As an Assembly Member, Michael Blake fought for and helped to pass a $15-dollar minimum wage in New York State. He has stood with airport workers and fast food workers fighting for dignity and respect on the job. In The Bronx, Michael Blake has organized his community and stood up for real criminal justice reform. His work in the Obama Administration demonstrates the leadership needed in Congress to hold the current administration accountable. Michael Blake has a proven track record of fighting for working people in his district, The Bronx, and throughout the country.”

“Make no mistake,” Blake concluded, “both of these endorsements are gamechangers in this race, and I am incredibly humbled that 1199SEIU and 32BJ SEIU support our #BelieveInTheBx vision as we fight for jobs and justice in The Bronx.”

Together, we #BelieveInTheBronx
